Europe’s largest property festival kicked off in Cannes today. MIPIM is a 4-day real estate exhibition, conference and networking event which sees 21,000 international property professionals descend on the south coast of France. Cushman & Wakefield is out in force with a global delegation of more than 150 real estate experts from 20+ countries.
A round-up of MIPIM Day 1
We have two major global research reports launching at MIPIM, the first of which is the “Atlas Outlook”. Providing an overview of the global real estate investment market in 2015, Atlas Outlook also looks at what’s in store for the rest of 2016. The report discusses the health and direction of the current market, the main areas of recent investment activity, macro drivers and, of course, risk. We then give our views on the global outlook, regional trends, and areas of opportunity where investment strategy can usefully be focused.
Panel Debates
Three key panel debates took place today and below is a roundup of the key points of discussion from each:

The panel agreed that Asia will really provide a strong basis for growth over the next 10 years and the debate then focused on which specific geographic and sector focused markets that growth would come from.

There was a wide-ranging discussion about the press China has received regarding the slowdown of its economic growth but the panel agreed that there was still an underlying strength in the economy and that reports could be misleading as there are still very attractive investment opportunities in China.

How close are we to creating the ultimate future City? This very well attended session (literally not even standing room left!) centred around a fascinating debate about cities of the future.
How will the city of the future #transform our lives? “It’s about choice and ensuring #tech is socially anchored” #MIPIM panel debate — Cushman & Wakefield (@CushWake) March 15, 2016
It was interesting that everyone on the panel recognised the need to find a balance in the use of technology and ensuring that there are tech free spaces where people can disconnect and unwind. Also acknowledged was the importance of cultural diversity in providing a rich and varied experience with individual outlets rather than homogenous and generic areas indistinguishable from city to city.

The panel then debated how fundamental infrastructure would be in delivering a the ultimate city of the future and, of course, how it would be powered. All panellists agreed that cities would need to be powered locally and eventually become fossil fuel free. You can watch a periscope broadcast of the panel debate below:
